May 30th is National Creativity Day, and there’s no better time to enjoy a day of creative activities with your family. To help you out with ideas for celebrating this special day, we’ve put together a list of fun activities that you can do together as a family!

Regardless of what type of activities your children enjoy, let them unleash their creativity with one of these ideas this summer.

Origami is a fun activity that your whole family will love to get involved with. It’s ideal for children of all ages and can be made as simple or as complex as you need.

Adults will enjoy challenging themselves to make exciting origami creations, whereas children might enjoy making a simple paper airplane they can fly across your home in a race. You can use authentic origami paper cut and printed to size, printer paper, lined schoolpaper, and other paper types.

Short Story Writing

If your child loves to dream up imaginary lands and create stories in their mind, encourage them to put their story down on paper.

If you have children who are not interested or able to write a story on their own, consider working together on the project to create a beautiful story book or picture book with their tale. You’ll enjoy looking back on this creation for many years to come and sharing it with your family and friends.

You can also explore simple stories, and discuss the nature of that story with your kids and how they might act in their shoes.

Also, instead of making up a whole story from scratch, try some mad libs with suggestions conjured up by the whole family!

When you think of creativity, you probably just think about fun activities involving art and crafts. However, the kitchen is the perfect place to spend some time this month, and children will love getting involved with decorating.

Depending on their age, you can bake the items yourself first, or if your kids are a little older, get them involved in the whole process. Create a table full of frosting and decorations for them to choose from, and then sit down together to enjoy your delicious homemade treats.

Create a Sidewalk Obstacle Course

Using chalk, wood planks, and just about anything from backyard twigs to cardboard boxes, you can create an exciting obstacle course for your children to explore. Tailor the obstacle course to fit your child’s needs (what obstacles, rules, themes) or let them get involved with decorating.

You can create a wide range of challenges for children, and depending on their age, you can make it as simple or as difficult as needed.

Scrapbooking

The majority of us today just take photos on our phones and never take the time to put these images on display. Use National Creativity Day to create a family scrapbook!

You’ll enjoy looking back on past vacations and adventures you’ve had together. Let your children pick out the images they like best, and then put together various crafty embellishments to brighten up your scrapbook.

If your kids are particularly into drama or singing, why not put on a little show? You can film the show to share or let parents and stuffed animals be the audience.

You could use a pre-written script or devise a story by yourselves. It’s a fun way to unleash your creativity and is a great activity for anyone who isn’t into crafts. Of course, you could also make costumes and props for the event, which will involve anyone who enjoys art in the process.

Young boys and girls love having their faces painted, and it’s a great way to give them a makeover for National Creativity Day. Start the day by asking your kids to design the image they’d like to have on their face, and then you can work together on this transformation.

Older children may enjoy using real make-up, and they can look at videos online to learn new techniques that they’ll enjoy using for years to come.

Make sure you only use paint that is approved and safe for face painting.

Learn a Popular Dance

We’ve all seen the endless dances that are making their rounds on TikTok this year, so why not enjoy a mini workout at home together learning a new routine. Dancing is a fun way to boost your mood, and you’ll soon be laughing at each other when you are trying to pick up the routine.

Take inspiration from your favorite dance movies and learn a full routine if you are feeling a little more adventurous. From there, you can film and upload your own video to show off to the world.

Be mindful of explicit language in some TikTok and Youtube videos. View videos yourself first before sharing with children.

Creativity today comes in so many different forms, and many children love the process of filming and editing.

Teach your children a useful skill by filming a day in the life vlog and then editing it together. You’ll then be able to upload it online or just share it with your family and friends who don’t live nearby.

It’s a fun way to keep in touch with relatives who live elsewhere in the country or abroad, and they’ll enjoy getting a glimpse into what you are up to as a family.

Tie-Dye T-Shirts and Other Goodies

Tie-dye is such a fun activity to do together as a family, and you can refresh your wardrobe in time for the summer months. While cheap t-shirts are probably the easiest thing to dye, you could be even more adventurous and create masks, sweaters, or canvas bags.

Everyone will be able to show off their unique personality and style by choosing clothes and tie-dye colors that match their wardrobes. If you have a summer vacation planned together this year, you could even create a matching set of t-shirts to wear on your trip.

Most large stores will have tie-dye stocked with white clothes available, and craft stores as well. You can experiment on brand new clothing items, or peruse your closets for items that tie dye could give new life to.
